The femur, or thigh bone, is the most proximal (closest to the body) bone of the leg in vertebrates capable of walking or jumping, such as most land mammals, birds, many reptiles such as lizards, and amphibians such as frogs. In vertebrates with four legs such as dogs and horses, the femur is found only in the rear legs.

The hip bone, innominate bone or coxal bone is a large, flattened, irregularly shaped bone, constricted in the center and expanded above and below. It has one of the few ball and socket synovial joints in the body – the so called hip joint.

It meets its fellow on the opposite side in the middle line in front, and together they form the sides and anterior wall of the pelvic cavity.

Together with the sacrum and coccyx, it comprises the pelvis.

A popular osteoporosis drug, Fosamax® and its generic form Alendronate®, is being said to cause spontaneous fractures.

Fosamax® is a drug used to strengthen bones, fomen who have taken the drug for five years are at risk of suffering spontaneous fractures.

Doctors are seeing many femurs fractured in patients who have been on the drug. This is especially concerning to doctors as the femur is one of the stronger bones in the body.

MEDICAL SOCIETY EXPERT PANEL CALLS FOR FOSAMAX FEMUR-FRACTURE WARNING
Earlier this week, an expert panel convened by the American Society of Bone & Mineral Research ("ASBMR") reviewed the growing data which demonstrate a risk of low-energy femur fractures from long-term use of oral bisphosphonates, including Fosamax and Actonel. The report is titled: "Atypical Subtrochanteric and Diaphyseal Femoral Fractures: Report of a Task Force of the American Society for Bone and Mineral Research". Discussing the danger of the long-term use of bisphosphonates (BPs), the authors called upon the industry to warn about the potential risk of these atypical femur fractures: "Atypical femoral fractures are of concern and more information is urgently needed, both to assist in identifying patients at particular risk and to guide decision-making about duration of BP therapy. Physicians and patients should be made aware of the possibility of atypical femoral fractures and of the potential for bilaterality, through a change in labeling of BPs."

An expert task force is recommending that new warnings be added about the risk of rare thigh bone fractures from Fosamax and other bisphosphonate medications.

“However, we are concerned that there may be a relationship between these fractures and long-term bisphosphonate use and, although the risk is low, we want to make sure that people know about the warning signs.”

Fosamax has come under scrutiny recently due to an increasing number of reports of low-trauma bone breaks among Fosamax users, usually involving the thigh bone or femur, which is one of the strongest bones in the human body.

In a review of previous research on Fosamax thigh fractures, the task force found that there was enough evidence to lend a “biological plausibility” to a connection between the long-term use of Fosamax and other bisphosphonates and sudden femur fractures. The bone specialists found that the fractures were still very rare, especially when compared to the number of other bone breaks that are prevented by the use of bisphosphonates.

Despite that, the researchers said that there is a concern that a lack of awareness and underreporting of Fosamax femur fractures is hiding the true number of bone breaks. If the FDA were to act on the researchers’ calls for femur fracture label warnings,
